Try is from Colbie Caillat's album Gypsy Heart. This empowering song addresses women experiencing the societal pressures that define beauty. Colbie admits that she has grown up feeling uncomfortable in her own skin; she was unsure of who she was supposed to be especially in the entertainment industry. Wearing makeup, getting your nails done, curling your hair, wearing nice clothes were some of the things that made her feel beautiful. Colbie’s message is that you don’t need to try so hard to be beautiful. Your natural self and imperfections are beautiful along with who you are as a person.
We grow up seeing all these “beautiful” women on social media, in magazines, and on websites. Technology has made it harder for us to love ourselves and easier for us to compare ourselves to others. I myself have been in these shoes, seeing all these models on Instagram and in magazines. I would say to myself, "I don't look like that, I wish I did." I wish someone told me growing up that I was thinking of beauty in a toxic way. I was only harming myself and my self esteem with these comparisons and criticisms. Beauty is so much more than how you look and we often don't think about that because we only see what's on the outside when we scroll through social media.
Set a goal for yourself and every time you catch yourself comparing your looks to someone else, remind yourself that you don’t need to look like them, or cover up your imperfections to be beautiful and liked. Colbie is a wonderful role model for young women, especially because she is a celebrity and many people hear her voice. You and your imperfections are beautiful no matter what anyone tells you, what you see on instagram, or what you see anywhere else. Tell yourself right now, "I am strong and beautiful" because you absolutely are and deserve to feel that way.
