Welcome to the end of the beginning…
“I’ve seen the future/And it works”-Prince
If you squint through the haze (Amnesia? Silver?), you can just about make out the future…
The genie is officially out of the bottle, and there will be no going back in. EVER.
By the time this scribble gets published, Germany will have nationally legalized adult use of cannabis. It is expected that this move will have a domino effect across Europe.
Recreational cannabis is already legal in places, like Thailand, Malta, Canada, Uruguay, Morocco, and South Africa.
Mexico, Portugal, Australia, Switzerland, India, Sri Lanka, Mexico and New Zealand have decriminalized cannabis, or at the very least, deprioritized it as an arrestable offence to possess it.
In the US, medical cannabis is legal in almost every state, while recreational cannabis is legal in over half of them, with the President leaning towards making it legal nationally under feral recognition.
Bill Hicks was right…If there is a war on drugs, then the people on drugs are winning it.
Trillions of dollars spent. Millions of hours in human power wasted. Meaningless empty hypocritical words and gestures.
All over a plant that grows naturally. And only one of its myriad uses involved consuming it.
Was there ever a point to all of this unnecessary nonsense?
So, what happens now?
What is the next great leap forward. And how does music and cannabis factor in to all of it?
I’m glad you asked! (You didn’t, but just play along…)
“Oh oh/You’ve got a beautiful future”-Primal Scream
So, from here on, it’s a beautifully blissed out, blunted, weedy fever dream of cannabis smoke and slow-moving food delivery trucks stuck in back-to-back traffic jams?
Nah, not really.
The limited minds who believe in stoner stereotypes have resigned themselves to being surrounded by fat lazy potheads guzzling sugary soft drinks, doing Fortnite dances.
Right now, we’re slowly experiencing what I and many others would call the ‘Green Rush.’ Areas experiencing access to legal recreational cannabis for the first time, are seeing a massive influx of retail businesses emerge where the average consumer can indulge in an IKEA-level range of cannabis strains that will have you disoriented before you even take one hit from a vape pipe.
It’s understandable. There’s a lot of scratch to be made in the retail cannabis market.
But there are many levels to this game we’ve yet to explore.
In time, the Green Rush will subside like a raging tidal bore.
But what exactly will be there?
Well, in my humble opinion, that next stage is already taking place in the form of cannabis lounges.
Stay with me…
“We gon’ be alright”-Kendrick Lamar
Any great movement or revolution never started in sobriety.
In order to be in a mindset to fuck things up, you gotta be a little fucked up to begin.
Remember all the stuff I talked about in all those previous articles? (There’s always a test at the end of stuff like this!)
Well, here’s where it all culminates.
Cannabis and music can create a space where people feel able to get their inside out.
The Green Rush is a necessary byproduct of this, because we’ve been playing the capitalism game for so long.
The proliferation of cannabis as a cash crop is going to smash capitalism into a million tiny pieces.
As long as there are seeds, we can grow cannabis and hemp.
Capitalism is about limiting supplies to make a small group of people richer than everyone else.
It is going to get progressively more difficult to limit access to a substance that literally grows everywhere.
In the meantime, we will gather together and talk to one another, listening to great tunes.
We will relax and get to know each other a bit better.
We will share thoughts, feelings, concepts, ideas, content, art and philosophies.
We will discover we have more in common than previously thought.
We will wonder about each other and talk more often.
Eventually these exchanges will reach a critical mass.
And that will be the end of the beginning.
“So high that I can kiss the sky”-Method Man & Redman
I don’t believe in Utopia. I used to, but Utopia would be kinda boring.
There’s always gonna be problems. Mainly because there’s always gonna be assholes. Because there just will be.
By that’s okay. We need balance. That’s how the Universe works.
I think we work best when we have a project to work on.
If we can free up a few more brains, I think we’ll have some great projects that can happen.
We just need to get some nineteen-year-old kid faded, and slap a pair of cans on his head.
Then wait to see what happens…
KEEP IT WEIRD AND WONDERFUL.
