What I love most about this track is its simplicity. Luke Pritchard’s fragile, and emotion-filled vocals paired with the delicate tones from the acoustic guitar– you can’t help but stop, sit down, and give it a really good listen. You know, to truly understand the lyrics. But here’s my take away from this: It’s entitled, “Petulia,” and you’d already think it’s about a love interest, or rather falling in love so deeply and that type of love, according to the lyrics, “sits just right,” or it’s what means the most to the artist other than anything else in the world. Although that’s true, I like to think of this song in another way too.
The listener can think up of anything that counts as their own, “Petulia,” It doesn’t necessarily have to be a person. It can be a moment. It can be a state of happiness or calmness. It can even be the person themselves. The melody of the entire track is slow, subtle, and light. Perfect for sitting outside to take a moment and just start thinking about life. It’s meant to drive your thoughts into thinking of that certain Petulia, just for you.
Remember that when you listen to music, it’s is a journey. You glide through the sound and stop to think about what it’s trying to say. And believe me, one way or another, it’ll relate to you in so many ways.
