With not a lot of information just yet on this rising star, I’m given the opportunity to talk about the song itself. What I do know about James Hersey is he was raised in Vienna, Austria and abandoned a jazz-guitar degree to become a singer-songwriter which all started with this song.
The first time I heard this song was when I was visiting a friend in Los Angeles on spring break back when I was in college. It was perfect outside; the smoggy air, 75 degree weather, the smell of the ocean. We drove around in her red mini-coop, windows down, blasting a playlist. When this song came on, she told me about how her boyfriend had dedicated it to her and while I thought about how incredibly sweet, and also very early on, their relationship was, I got into the vibe. The vibe: we’re young, no responsibilities, relaxing in great weather in a big city, falling in love with everyone and everything. A little cheesy, sure, but that’s what this song evokes: Bliss.
This song isn’t only on my strut playlist because of how high your head will be held while listening to it, but it’s also on my Spring playlist, dedicated to songs that make you want to wear sundresses, your new sunglasses, flower crowns, and roll around in a perfectly grassy field (which I’ve only found once). Maybe it’s because Spring is definitely starting to hit NYC or maybe because the winter has just been way too long, but sometimes a person needs to remember how it feels to soak up the sun. To feel young and warm and happy on that perfect Spring day.
