Honestly, I should be paid by the entertainment industry due to how often I promote shows and movies. Now, I’m not sure how many people actually read these posts, if any, but for those who might, you might know I’m a cinephile and a tv show…phile… (is there a word for that, too?). I’m always referencing entertainment in these posts. This week’s track is no different. If you aren’t into television (weird but okay) then at least watch it for the incredible soundtrack, stunning make up design, and beautiful cinematography. What show, you ask?Euphoria on HBO. And the track? All For Us by Labrinth.
Labrinth, born Timothy McKenzie, is a British artist who has worked with Sia, Diplo, and breakout star Zendaya. His music is modern and has a clubby vibe while still maintaining meaning and emotion.
Hired as the composer for Euphoria, a couple of his tracks are on the soundtrack, including the track of the week. All For Us is about the sacrifice one makes for love. Taking the point of view of the main character of Euphoria, Rue, a drug addict whose father passed away from cancer, the song is about doing everything you can for the ones you love and needing them to save you from your own self. “I hope one of you comes back to remind me of who I was when I go disappear into that goodnight”. Although Rue knows she needs to be there for her family, she needs someone to save her from her self destructive drug addiction.
The show shines a pretty bright light on drug addiction among teenagers and although the show may take some things a little too extreme, a lot of the issues the show presents happen to teenagers in some way, shape or form. It’s important to realize that many people have a difficult time managing life and all its twists and turns, ups and downs. It can’t be easy in a day and age where technology can be your worst enemy when you’re young.
Labrinth and Zendaya hit it out of the park with a catchy, modern, young song while still conveying meaning. Although a little darker of a song, I still have urges to dance and move to the beat when I hear it when I walk, and even when I’m just sitting on the train…
