“The Game Of Love” is a great example of everything that makes Daft Punk such a great and iconic duo, the song is catchy and yet sad, the melody is beautiful and so well written that days, weeks or even years after hearing the song it could still pop into your head at a certain time and remind you to listen to it one more time. It’s also very easy to remember, even a bit haunting, like heartbreak songs need to be.
The textures, the instrumentation, the harmony, the solos, it all fits perfectly to create a specific mood, to help the song express a feeling, a memory, so distinct and yet so familiar, permeated with a very unique and recognizable style. You know immediately you’re listening to a Daft Punk song even if it’s completely different in character to all other Daft Punk songs you’ve heard.
We tend to overlook how difficult it is to create something that can be easily popular, beautiful, portrait sadness, exemplify grief and not become the least bit melodramatic, only great musicians like Daft Punk can achieve such balance in their craft and also add that distinctive touch which shapes their unique style within every song.
The song becomes more impressive when you think about the difficulty of achieving great emotion and expressiveness by using a completely artificial voice pitch, it’s true that this has become more common in today’s music but it’s almost never intended to feel like it isn’t a human voice, even if it sounds nothing like it. Here one can tell the voice does intend to sound non-human and yet it can make you relate to it completely in spite of its artificiality, it feels like being completely empathetic to a machine, a machine that understands you completely, so much you forget it’s a machine.
Enjoy this masterpiece and let it fill your nights with its unique essence.
