“Being human hurts. We try so hard to avoid this fact…”
I was reading the other day this blog entry from a doctor called Lissa Rankin, someone I admire very much and consider a very wise person. She was talking about how we tend to avoid pain constantly and it always ends up being worse for us, and how sometimes we even use positive thinking and spiritual practices like yoga and meditation to avoid feeling it.
We should allow pain to touch us, we should allow ourselves to feel pain if we want to heal, it should become one of our greatest teachers if we want to let go of our baggage and be free, become what we came to be in this world.
Our everyday lives tend to be built around avoiding painful experiences, and that’s natural, it’s our basic brain instinct, but it doesn’t allow us to heal, because emotional pain doesn’t really go away when we ignore it, it only gets buried and starts accumulating.
This song just came to me when I was thinking about what to add to the playlist this week, it’s a song I used some years ago on a blog I have where I write personal stuff. I remembered it very suddenly and realized it was perfect for the playlist, it’s a song that reminds me of someone else’s pain and the bravery to accept it in order to recover after a moment of crisis.
I don’t think we realize how incredible human beings are, I don’t think we honor enough the amazing capacity we have to endure pain and overcome the worse experiences, we tend to focus only on the negative stuff of our species and we don’t honor enough the amazing strength and endurance, the ability to recover from the most painful situations. We don’t realize the courage and value of every day lived after we survived a painful experience, I love this song cause it makes me remind that, the enormous value of standing back up after we fail and lose ourselves for a moment.
I see people and know people that have gotten through the worst circumstances, horrible trauma, horrific pain, death, addictions, violence… I can only remind myself how admirable that is and how vast humanity’s ability to resist and heal is, I think we don’t honor that enough, this week I felt the urge to honor it and remind myself that I can start over and recover too, just like so many people have done and are doing right now.

When you listen to music like this one you also remember what it is to be connected to nature, you remember part of the sound of nature in that organic sound, the wood just resonating to the sound of strings being touched, you remember the essential and feel ready to transport yourself again to the best parts of life.
