There had to be some Radiohead on our playlist, it was inevitable and long overdue, it was just indispensable to add to our playlist some of the music these great musicians from our time have produced.
I chose this particular time because it’s a very special week here in Colombia, on this Wednesday, April the 25th, Radiohead is going to have their first concert in our country. Their first. Ever. And I’m going to be there. Special beyond words.
I chose this song because of its beauty and its particular character, some say it has something to do with Thom Yorke’s ex-wife, about their divorce, her cancer diagnosis and their separation, some even say the song’s video clip is a metaphor of all their years together, they say the 23 doors Thom opens through the video are symbols of the 23 years of marriage, and that he actually says “half my life” in the end. She passed away a year after the divorce.
It’s not something that’s been confirmed but you can tell there’s a special feeling around this song, my sister listened to it and showed it to my mom and me in the first week of our grief for my father’s recent death, she mentioned all the details I just spoke about and even though I had heard it a lot of times before it suddenly became more special to me, a connection to someone else’s grief that allowed me to live my own.
“Dreamers… They never learn”… I’ve dreamt three times about my father since his death, one as if he was still alive, the other as a goodbye and the third one, a mild recreation of his final days like if I had gone back in time, with all the frustration of knowing he was dying but still trying to save him, wondering if there would be anything that could have changed the final outcome, even the slightest detail.
I think my dreams do have taught me, I’ve accepted them as a natural part of the process, steps on the path to the final acceptance that will eventually come.
