Benjamin Clementine has something to say, a lot to say. His art feels very personal and vocal, his singing is pure, sometimes even a bit raw. He seems willing to show you something and his way is not mysterious, he wants to shout it to the world, without fear, without regrets, without restrain but always with pure intention and beauty.
Benjamin Clementine’s music doesn’t need much embellishment or many effects, his soul is present, it doesn’t take much more than that to make everything memorable, to be worth listening to. When a soul gets faithfully portrayed art has accomplished its purpose, it doesn’t matter if it gets to one or to a million people, it doesn’t matter if it captivates one heart or a thousand, it has accomplished its true meaning.
This world needs more artists like Benjamin Clementine, more people willing to express all they truly feel deep inside, all they are, everything that lights up their souls, only when we honor ourselves can we honor our life and every blessing we came to give and receive in this world.
Condolence, a song with a certain expressiveness that isn’t affected by its continuous motion, has two very different versions of which I recommend both, the studio version (chosen for this playlist) and a more acoustic version with only piano accompaniment, like the one in his magnificent NPR music desk concert. Both are special in their own way, with a very transcendental climax that gets to me every time, a huge release from all the tension, a wonderful way to let you finally ease into the infinite. I hope you enjoy them both and let them resonate in the night.
