So many times has this world been blessed with souls so beautiful that just by existing and sharing their lives and essence through music have touched and changed millions of lives. Mercedes Sosa and Luis Alberto Spinetta were exactly that, a blessing to this world, and we’re blessed enough to have a recording of a song sung by both of them.
Both were pure forces of nature, enduring many decades of musical careers and making so much music in so many different styles. Mercedes, more focused on folklore and Luis Alberto, much more focused on rock, both such enormous icons of argentine music, such gifted and kind people, knew how extremely valuable each other’s talent was and were always humble enough to praise each other properly.
And finally came this song, written by Spinetta at the tender age of fifteen years old! A classic song of his that Mercedes chose for them to perform in duet on her final studio album, both were on the last years of their lives, Sosa would pass away on that same year, Spinetta would pass away three years later. Their voices were already a bit tired, their bodies settled in their final phase, yet their souls, freer than ever, were ready to deliver one of the most touching performances I’ve ever heard.
I’ve never been that focused on lyrics when I listen to music, it’s one of the aspects I tend to ignore more often and quite easily, but this song just made them impossible to overlook, the lyrics are so profound and so poetic, so perfect to portrait mortality and time… It’s then when one realizes how absolutely special Spinetta was, a soul so special and who could speak with such poetic wisdom about the end of life even having a fifteen year old body.
The lyrics are so special that deserve a translation for those of you who can’t understand them:
If I don’t sing what I feel
I’ll die inside
I shall scream to the winds until I burst
Even if there’s only time in my place
If I want I can touch my soul
For my flesh is no longer anything
I shall fuse my remain with the awakening
Even if my mouth rots for being silent
I’m already wanting it
I’m already becoming a song
Maybe mud…
This is my bark
Where the axe will hit
Where the river will dry out to quieten
The moments already worry me
My temple is already a lament
My brain already spits out the end of the record
Of the beginning that will maybe resume

When you listen to music like this one you also remember what it is to be connected to nature, you remember part of the sound of nature in that organic sound, the wood just resonating to the sound of strings being touched, you remember the essential and feel ready to transport yourself again to the best parts of life.
