First released as a single along with a must-watch music video, Jhené Aiko’s “While We’re Young” perfectly captures the giddy, blissful, and carefree feeling of when you first fall in love. With a fusion of traditional soul and pop-oriented R&B, the singer-songwriter draws out a love-story fit for a teenage rom-com with an excitement that can only be described as contagious.
This week’s track starts out mimicking a heartbeat which carries on through to the end. The airy feel of the track paired with the thumping beat will make you feel like you’re floating in the space between. And when Jhené Aiko’s ethereal voice finally joins the mix – it’s perfection. In addition to her flawless runs and sugary backing vocals, the singer-songwriter just has a knack for putting out catchy melodies time and again. “While We’re Young” is of course no exception and the simple yet memorable lyrics will be popping up in your head all day long.
Off of her 2017 album Trip, “While We’re Young” marks the start of the album’s love story, which at first glance seems to be about chasing desire or some sort of temporary high. However, the album goes much deeper, instead following Aiko on her healing journey after the loss of her brother, Miyagi Chilombo, to cancer in 2012 and the series of romantic relationships and vices she uses to fill that void. To give the single context and observe Aiko’s full journey, definitely take a listen to Trip.
And if you’ve become as obsessed as I am with this song, check out the “While We’re Young” music video as well. Clearly a play on the movie 50 First Dates, Jhené Aiko stars in the video as a woman with short-term memory loss who repeatedly falls in love with the same man. Not only is the video funny, engaging, and beautiful, but paired with the song, it’ll give you butterflies for sure. Whether you listen to it as a single, with the music video, or as you’re listening to Trip, “While We’re Young” is an amazing track and one of the better love songs you’ll find.
