R&B singer-songwriter Alina Baraz and R&B pop icon Khalid teamed up in 2017 to make “Electric”, one of the most blissful songs I’ve ever heard. In the track, both artists speak of a rare, new love that’s “deeper than the sea” and as far-reaching as “outer space”. What’s most impressive, though, is the intimacy the two artists are able to create within a mere 3 minutes. Not only does the lyricism frame this love story of dreams in a beautifully detailed way but their voices fall and soar with the track to make it practically love-inducing.
Alina Baraz, known for her smooth, breathy vocals and dark music, perfectly complements Khalid’s low, slightly raspy voice and lighter music. The combination creates a sultry track that highlights both of their signature styles in beautiful harmony.
Steadily played throughout most of the song, there are three notes that repeat and drive the track. At first, Alina Baraz’s voice floats above those propelling notes as the track builds up tension and suspense. Rhythmic consistency is a common trait of most of her music and grounds all of her music. Similarly, when Khalid takes the spotlight in the second verse, he carries the melody smoothly over the steady, now familiar three notes. This isolation of both the artists gives the illusion of both artists giving their own take on a new desire and makes an even bigger contrast with the blossoming love in the chorus when they sing together.
The chorus, then, is exhilarating as it’s the first time we see the duo fully bouncing off each other. The guitar and percussion make the chorus stable yet bouncy and full of life. Both artists show off their incredible voices with runs filling most pauses and together, create an environment of pure bliss and excitement. The bridge, as a sharp contrast, is not grounded at all and imitates the floating feeling of being in love. Alina Baraz carries this section with her sweet and lilting vocals, only to be brought right back into the fire with Khalid yet again.
So, if you’re looking for a track that’s provocative, passionate, and just gorgeous, definitely put on “Electric”. With their vastly different yet complementary voices and styles, Alina Baraz and Khalid are the power duo when it comes to love songs.
