Canadian singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar released his debut studio album Freudian in 2017 as an exploration of the importance of sexuality in human behavior, as it relates to Freud. The term ‘Freudian’ itself refers to a follower of neurologist Sigmund Freud and his methods. The album contains several hits like “Get You” and “Best Part” as well as eight other stunning tracks, including the ballad “Blessed.”
Produced by Jordan Evans and Matthew Burnett, this track has one of the warmest, most blissful feels to it that I’ve ever heard. For the first minute of the song, all we hear is Caesar’s smooth and soulful voice backed by an equally important piano guiding and lifting him. There’s a short interlude with some piano recorded to sound ‘vintage’ in a way very familiar to fans of Daniel Caesar. Later in the track, there’s added layers of harmonies and noises that make the track seem more and more angelic and ethereal, getting closer and closer to the feeling of being truly blessed. Soon after, we find ourselves at the climax of the track when Caesar swings into the bridge with the promise of “I’m coming back home to you.” The bass kicks into full gear and finally makes the track sound rounded and full of life and love. A chorus of soft voices joins Caesar too, humming and emphasizing “home” as we settle in. At this point, the driving force is the steady drum and listeners can’t help but feel safe and warm.
When I put this track on for the first time, I was alone and instantly found myself losing track of time as I was lulled to sleep by Caesar’s voice. Both lyrically and musically, this is a stunning song that brings out a calmness you might not even know you had. If you’re ever feeling nervous or stressed, try putting on “Blessed” and I’m sure you’ll come out feeling refreshed and at peace. This is truly one of Daniel Caesar’s best works and if you haven’t checked it out at this point, you’re missing out.

About the Curator: Rhea Patil
As an 18 year old who just moved to New York City to study Music Business at NYU, I’m constantly finding myself in unfamiliar territory and have come to realize I’m not going to settle in anytime soon. So, while I’ve been exploring the city and growing from each experience, I’ve racked up a pretty extensive list of the best music I’ve come across and want to keep sharing this art with you. When I'm not discovering and sharing new music though, I'm writing and creating my own music to share with the world. In fact, I’m working on releasing my debut EP right now!
