Kurt Cobain was desperate. He tried to tell us through his music, but we didn’t listen. Sometimes the sadness of love can be so overbearing that we don’t know what to do about it.
“Something In The Way” is a simple, repetitive song, reaffirming the idea of desperation. A cello ominously pads the airy background vocals on the chorus, creating this interesting texture – almost like that of The Beach Boys.
Kurt describes a literal sense of desperation in Nirvana’s “Something In The Way” from Nevermind, describing himself living under a roadway overpass. We can draw direct comparisons from this song to what being in love feels like: we can be left abandoned, withering away under an overpass as we hear the love of other people pass us by. We are left behind, wanting more, desperate for a taste of what it’s like to go full speed ahead with their love. The “tarp [that] has a sprung a leak” is but a fragile shelter for our hearts, which feel as though one more blow would knock them into an uncontrollable spiral.
Remember that this song is in this list because on some level you wish to enjoy being sad. Sadness is not a feeling we wish to experience forever, but it is healthy to feel sad and to listen to sad music. Contemplating suicide is not the answer to your problems, Music to Simp to is.
