I remember many times walking through the hallways of my high school, locking eyes with the girl of my dreams, yet neither of us stopped to say hello. I was too paralyzed by my fear to know what would become of my feelings, unable to even find out if she shared the same feelings for me.
This is what “Only In Dreams” by Weezer is about. It describes a school dance, in which the main character looks desperately onto his love, only able to dream about what would happen if he took action. Only In Dreams is an alternative rock song from the 90’s, featuring some great guitar playing and awesome background vocals. It’s a lengthy number, but its length lends itself to the desperation of the story. Weezer has an appearance that makes them out to be nerdy, but the emotions they are describing in this song are universal: everyone can relate to this song.
The love I felt for this girl in high school has not gone away. I still look back upon those days only a few years removed and wished I had made a different choice. As is the nature of love, I cannot guarantee that she would have reciprocated her feelings for me, but at least there was hope. For now, I am left to relive those days through songs like “Only In Dreams”.
