I was first turned onto “Bourrée” from watching their You Tube music video. It is a hoot! Dressed up in colonial day costumes, the members consist of Johannes Weik on guitar, Florian Weik on drums, and David Gilbers on bass. What caught me off guard was that the band was very young and very talented, especially now a days when rock guitar is seldom heard on mainstream music. I know this firsthand having 3 teenagers and being subjected to commercial radio and streaming platforms in the car. So, it was extremely refreshing to hear new music from a band that I could relate to, and Johannes Weik’s incredible guitar playing. At that point, I decided that he would be a perfect to interview for Guitar Trax on WFIT 89.5FM.
As I found out, Johannes is a German guitarist born in 1989 who’s first encounter with the guitar was when he was 4 years old vacationing in the Czech Republic with his family. They stopped at a local music store and that is where he fell in love with a particular guitar. His parents bought the guitar and Johannes fell asleep grasping his new best friend. From then on, he started to learn classical guitar as well as rock styles. He is a big fan of the band Dream Theatre and his main guitar idol is John Petrucci from the band. Interestingly he plays a Paul Reed Smith hollow body guitar because of its diversity of tone and a 7 string Paul Reed Smith SE guitar.
I actually just had Johannes record two guest solos on progressive rock songs for an upcoming album I’m producing-that’s how good he is! Check out the song “Bourrée” with its neo-classical rock influences and you’ll see what I mean!
