“Must be something in the muddy water, turns the whiskey ‘bout as sweet as sin. Every drunk in town can sing a brown bag hymn…” Whaaaaa?! Play that back a couple times… with such thought-provoking lyrics, Southern Gothic by Tyminski is meant for this playlist.
This song resonates with me especially because I’ve never been particularly religious. Sounds contradictory, I know. Though I was raised Catholic, I consider myself to be more of a “supernatural humanist”. Meaning, I believe we live in a mystical universe and that we should treat our fellow humans with respect, honesty, and kindness. I don’t attend church every Sunday, and I don’t confess my sins to a priest, which makes me a pretty awful Catholic. However, I am 100% certain that I choose to treat people with love and respect, and that makes me a good person. I’m good with that.
Conversely, It sounds like Tyminski’s Southern Gothic town is full of traditional God-fearing folk that regularly pray at one of the many churches on every corner of town, yet somehow, they’ve got a snowball’s chance in hell of making it to heaven. Why? Because no matter how many times they go to church to pray and confess their sins, they are disrespectful and dishonorable with each other everyday. Makes ya think, right?
“This town’s got the good lord shaking his head. Looking down thinking we ain’t heard a word he said… Nothing left to do but kneel and pray. We got a church on every corner, so why does heaven feel so far away?”
So, no matter what your beliefs are, be kind to each other, lost souls.
