Many jellyfish are familiar with the very large island in the Pacific Ocean comprised of the nation of Papua New Guinea and the future nation of West Papua. In fact, this island is home to one fifth of all the species of living things on earth, as well as one fifth of all human languages. Sadly, West Papua is currently occupied and oppressed by Indonesia and is the scene of one of the least publicized ongoing human rights atrocities in the world, largely funded by a US gold & copper mining company and other greedy outsiders.
Black Brothers are a legendary West Papuan band from the 70s and 80s who produced high energy music combining elements of rock, reggae and funk. They were founded by manager Andy Ayamiseba, who is now a leading figure in the West Papua National Coalition for Liberation and a major advocate for West Papuan self-determination. The Black Brothers performed songs in Indonesian and sometimes in Tok Pisin (Papuan Pidgin) and enjoyed tremendous popularity both in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Their songs remain popular to this day.
The surviving members of the band played a reunion concert for Papua New Guinea's 41st anniversary in Port Moresby in 2016 -- their first performance in 38 years. They were joined by the three daughters of lead guitarist and singer, the late August Rumwaropen, who carry on their father's musical legacy as "The Black Sistaz" ( http://www.theblacksistaz.com/ ) in Melbourne. Two of the Sistaz, Lea and Petra Rumwaropen, also sing with the excellent Australian reggae band, Blue King Brown ( http://bluekingbrown.com/ ).
