Here’s a song that gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Andra Day has a powerful way of delivering this song with a whole lot of real and raw emotion. The message she’s giving is one that I feel is too often an unspoken thing. She’s speaking into our own battles and the fighters inside of each of us. A message as powerful as this will always be relevant, but perhaps for a listener it will be especially important for them to hear this right now.
In the face of adversity, I truly don’t think we’re meant to go at it alone. This song is here to dispel any thought that says otherwise. Sometimes we get so caught up in our head that we think whatever struggle it is we’re going through is one nobody cares about, has experience with, or can help out with. But, the truth of the matter is, you’re known. You’re seen.
Behind every tragedy is people gathering alongside one another to rise up. Sometimes that looks like speaking out, calling out sources of pain or injustice. Sometimes that looks like prayer or a march. But no matter what, it is always someone being present for another in the midst of the pain. That’s the beacon of hope in the song for her, him, them and us. When it looks like you’re surrounded, you can actually be surrounded by others who will help you persevere.
I dedicate this post for anyone who chose not to be silent or passive when they saw another struggling because you give me hope.
