How freeing this song makes me feel because it reminds me that emotional self-sufficiency is a MYTH! I mean, how often do we try to pretend that we can always be strong enough for ourselves? I try that and I end up getting my butt kicked by life.
I was a phone at 10% banking on strength I didn’t even have at that point from trying to manage and control every part of my life for so long. I was burying insecurities deep down, clinging on so hard to past experiences and refusing to bring up even what could be perceived as the tiniest problem. Doing this all on your own is absolutely draining to say the least.
One of the best advice I’ve ever received was that if you hold onto everything in your world – clenching onto all of it with a tight fist to keep it all together – it’s going to hurt trying to pry every finger off in an attempt to free you from what you need to let go of. So surrendering all of it with hands open also allows you to freely receive good things in return!
Noah Kahan is singing about how he writes his fears on green notes, so as to make them seem small and less frightening. They’re fears you can literally crumple up and throw away. There’s strength found in that and there’s strength in knowing you can acknowledge and come face-to-face with those fears in the first place.
Sometimes, you need to be a passenger instead of the driver. You’ve been steering and pressing on that pedal for too long. So surrender that driver’s seat and sit back and relax on the passenger side. Take a breath and just enjoy the ride!
