“I just really want to be present this year.” That’s the late-night conversation I found myself having in the room I share with my best friend. And it got me thinking.
We spend so much time on our phones trying to keep up with what everyone else is doing that we end up missing what’s going on around us and right in front of us. The endless scrolling, “liking” and viewing stories only ends up with us convinced that where we are at the moment ain’t actually where it’s at.
OneRepublic’s “Connection” is all about refusing to simply go through the motions. The song plays like a desperate search for finding something authentic and real while also trying to remember who you are.
And if as humans it’s in our nature to desperately crave connection, then that’s got to mean something stronger than a WiFi/internet/high speed data connection, right? I’m so guilty of forgetting this simple concept though. While I would define myself as a pretty relational person, I’ve still gone through an entire day crossing paths with literally thousands of people from the university to the greater part of Santa Barbara, constantly attached to my phone.
What happens when we make a conscious effort not to? We start re-prioritizing those meaningful conversations with the people around us. We’re more focused, less anxious. We remember all these things we love doing, and the people we love doing those things with. We’re happier, we’re present.
Who knew that sometimes it takes disconnecting in order to rediscover the things worth attaching yourself to?
