Dayton, Ohio.
Augusta, Georgia.
New Orleans, Louisiana.
Oakland, California.
All acceptable answers to the question, “where is the Funk music capital?” But Vancouver, British Columbia?
Funk is more Johnnie Walker than Crown Royal. Maybe the host of the 2010 Winter Olympics can’t lay claim to funk as it’s home yet, but an underground group that goes by Schwey is on a mission to be at least a write-in candidate. Schwey is comprised of Jacob Schwinghammer, brothers Isaiah and Jarah Dobbs, and they are one album and one EP deep into their career.
“I finally found some time”
Our track of the week, “freetime”, is a collaboration between Schwey and another six letter S-word, Satchy. Hailing from Southern California, Satchy is a fellow up-and-comer, more jazz than funk, but the fusion makes for a chill-funk vibe that begs to be put on repeat. This is also a song where the content matches the form, as the lyrics are simple and to the point:
“Finally it’s just you and me / I can’t wait to sit and watch TV”
Free time is one of those elusive blocks on a working person’s calendar, as we go from the job that pays us, to the job of maintaining what that paycheck created. Free time often feels like stolen time, filled with guilt like a reluctant criminal. The solace in this track is simple: if Schwey and Satchy can find free time, surely we can as well. Start off your newfound escape by grabbing a drink and playing this track. Either Johnnie or Crown will do.
