Mantras. Repeated decrees of our truest innermost self that echo and surround our lives, manifesting and propelling ourselves forward.
Mantras are the key of honing your energy and focusing inward. At the beginning of my yoga classes, I love to set a mantra - a defining phrase for students to come back to in order to focus on their moving meditation that is yoga. In my latest class, I had set the seemingly simple mantra of "I Will Be Free." Free to discover what you are truly passionate about, Free to feel the anguish and discomfort, Free to feel the gratitude and joy, Free to live their lives as they need to. It
This week's track is very special. It emotes and dictates a story of a man's journey inward towards his truest self via the tools of yoga and meditation. The track is "I Will Be Free" from Nandan Gautam's new album The King of the Sea. Nandan Gautam left America twenty years ago, to return to India and study yoga and meditation under Spiritual Master, Bharat Thakur. His first novel and album, The King of the Sea, is a metaphysical interpretation of his inner journey towards the truth.
His first track on this album, "I Will Be Free", represents and illustrates a story of pathos, conflict, and a deep awakening of truth and love. This first track captivates the listener and sets the tone of the rest of the album - diving deep and uncovering the truth and what it truly means to live. It serves a reawakening. A call to return to what we already know is true yet has been so long forgotten. You can hear the distant pain that is echoed in Nandan's voice, yet still he repeats this mantra to serve as a tool to carry himself forward. So perfectly captured and executed in this album. He allows the music and lyrics to come to him which allows for a natural flow of truth emanating from his heart.
The mantra narration entices and draws you in, and serves as a baseline to return as you become lost in tranquil depths of blissful calmness. This sea of tranquility offers smooth oceanic synths, gentle plucking of a deep bass, and airy, breezy overtones and chants that sail you from rolling wave to rolling wave that is the inner journey.
Set your intention. Set your Mantra. And set yourself up with the opportunity to be free to dive into your innermost self.
