One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is the permission to let go, the permission to surrender our past and to change for the better. It is only when you fully acknowledge the past that you can truly begin to let go and release. King of Leon's "Arizona" effortlessly draws this emotion out with their opening guitar rift. So simple and elegant, it grounds you down into your space as your mind begins to unhinge itself from the present moment. As the lead guitar floats in, you are reawaken, allowing yourself to start anew.
Each event of our life depicts a story. Sometimes that story is bright and uplifting, and other times that story haunts you to this very day, but the importance of telling that story is all the same. "Arizona" does not depict Caleb Followill's most glamorous story. He writes this song out of love for Arizona that he holds close to his heart, but tells a story of seeing a gorgeous woman at a brothel where all he could think about is "how far did she fall that she ended up here?" His pure and raw emotion echoes throughout your subconscious as the song progresses. He writes this song to emphasize that there are two sides to our personalities, and that we need to take both in as one cannot exist without the other. This Yin and Yang duality permeates in every aspect of life, driving us to be more complete and fulfilled.
So go on and soak up the past with this track and allow yourself to fully embrace the present.
