This song has been popping up now and again for me, I decided to pick In the Waiting line this week as it speaks to my current state the most.
From their debut album, Simple Things released in 2001, Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker or Zero 7, bring us In the Waiting Line. Accomplished sound engineers, the English duo worked with The Pet Shop Boys and Robert Plant, among many others before officially forming Zero 7. Sophie Barker, singer songwriter co-wrote the track and is the voice you hear. Sophie released her third solo album in January this year, Break the Habit. Hmmm, sounds interesting.
When I heard this track during the week, it occurred to me that I was, in the waiting line. Self imposed, I was waiting for “the right time” to start something for myself. Prioritising others needs as an excuse to avoid my own. Looking outside for ways to move forward, getting different ideas from every angle. No focus, no anchor to anything I was stuck in a tug of war between my thinking brain and what my heart wanted. Becoming more agitated and frustrated, I hadn’t made space and time to listen to what I wanted next for myself. Why would I do that? If I put myself in the arena, I would have to be ready for what comes next. Out of my control, open, vulnerable and hopefully……loving it.
I know now that the opposite of within is without, I am no longer happy to be without. I needed to make time and space to find my answers within. The wise ones say, Discipline is the key to freedom and they are right. Following a thread to unravel a belief system, with enough courage to take one step forward at a time. Each step forward, one further away from, the waiting line.
I am not responsible for anyone else’s happiness, nor is anyone responsible for mine. I am responsible for my happiness. And with this belief clutched tight to my chest, I walk forward and know that my choice to act is not made without me but within me.
How often do we use others as an excuse to stay in the waiting line, to not take action towards our dreams?

About the Curator: Erin Murray
Erin, a Mother of 1 little man and wife to 1 big man has learnt much about herself in the past few years. After moving from the city to the bush (near the Ocean), there weren’t as many distractions as she had become accustomed to, in a smaller community she lost her anonymity and slowly began to become aware of herself, her feelings, the life she had created for herself and her relationships with others. Seeking change from the feelings and behaviors which had become her normal, she sought out methods to do just that. Slowly at first, then a bit more and a bit more she is becoming aware of what she actually wants for herself and has begun removing the things that aren’t that, inside and out. Learning about faith (not religionJ), fun and how to be gentle with herself and others along the way.

How does wisdom come to us? How do we become, wise?
We are so many versions of ourselves in a lifetime. Can we see each version and honour it, thank it and move on? Knowing that each version brought us to here and now, knowing that we did the best we could at the time, and if we didn’t we learnt from it…
