Carry Your Kin by The Breath appeared on the album of the same name in 2016. I have chosen the acoustic version, featured on the Carry Your Kin Acoustic EP. Ríoghnach Connolly sings with an old world patience, accompanied by Stuart McCallum on guitar. This is clean, crisp and very special.
Everything about this song makes me think of holding onto pain in place of someone lost. So I have written about pain.
Where do you keep your pain?
How do you hide from it?
How do you be with it?
How do you not be with it?
It has been with you for so long, are you scared you won’t know yourself without it?
What happens next?
Can you surrender it all?
And walk freely to find your way again?
To feel free in the wind and sunshine for more than a moment?
Maybe it’s time?
How do you feel free from the pain, and does it mean you are letting them go?
You will still remember them and all their stories, but it won’t hurt so much anymore to remember, to feel, to be with another.
You are allowed to feel good all by yourself. You are not your pain, it has taught you much, and if you understand it, you can set it free to serve another.
Write a letter to your pain, understand it, and set it free. Free yourself.
