I don’t remember where I first heard this song, or how long ago I heard it, but it has stuck with me since.
What I do remember is the way this song made me feel. It has such a fun beat and vibe. The kind where you want to get up and just dance. The lyrics focus on feeling nervous, and like you can’t be yourself in whatever situation you’re in. The chorus booms with having a space where everyone can relax, have fun, and dance. It is definitely a feel good song.
I learned a few months after I first heard this song that it was written for the LGBTQ+ community. The place is an imaginary place, free of judgement and hatred. A place where people in the community could feel safe and encouraged to be themselves. While I do not identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I am, and have always been, an ally. I think this song has been desperately needed by the community. I think it is so cool that MUNA decided to write a song for their fellow LGBTQ+ community. I think it’s even cooler that it has since blossomed, and while it still is meant for the LGBTQ+ community, other communities, such as BIPOC, can also enjoy and feel welcomed and included and safe.
Everyone deserves a safe space and community to feel support and love. There is so much hate and negativity in the world, and the internet and social media don’t really make it better. Music is an escape from reality, creating a community of fans with similar interests or backgrounds. Music like this is so important – it creates what some people desperately need. It creates a space for people to escape to when life gets hard.
This song is a great song to dance and sing to. Let loose, and enjoy being 100% yourself when it comes on!
