While many people associate the music with the Exorcist and Halloween soundtracks, I associate it with lying on my back in Singapore, looking up at the sky and playing along with every instrument as the mad Master of Ceremonies Vivian Stanshall announced them.
It's an insane track - 26 minutes long, leaping all over the musical spectrum - employing crazy ass instrumentation from synthesizers through double speed guitars to the eponymous Tubular Bells.
Mike Oldfield was 19 when he created it using the over-dubbing techniques that the Beatles had pioneered on albums like Revolver and Rubber Soul. It formed one of Richard Branson's first bets and probably paved the way for space tourism...yeah - it's that good!
