I’ve been thinking a lot about the act of creation – the last few tracks on the playlist have dealt with ideation – how ideas manifest – and how to create the right sonic environment to nurture the development and ultimate capture of the elusive muse.
But as I’ve moved from ideation to manifestation, the energy of the playlist needed to change – solo piano is good for thinking – but 8 minutes of 130 bpm edm is great for getting things down. While the radio edit of the track buries the hook deep in your brain, it’s this longer remix that creates the environment for that hook to go to work – creation can indeed be a lonely act – and that end vision we’re all clinging to – well that’s generally for us alone.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
The development of the musicto community through 2021 has been an astonishing thing to watch – after years of trying to find the “thing” that would create real community – it finally dawned on us that community came from creation, and not creation in isolation, but creation through collaboration.
The insight came when curators who had been involved with musicto for several years, started to make playlists together. This wasn’t something we had encouraged or promoted – it just happened organically – we saw community interactions multiply rapidly and not only did we have more playlists to present to the world those lists were like nothing anybody on their own could have come up with and the curators themselves were developing stronger relationships with each other by collaborating together.
We’ve subsequently changed our entire community setup, our on-boarding, the focus of the leadership team – everything. The result has been dramatic and kinda life changing really.
The nicest thing for me personally is that the dream I’ve been carrying for years – on my own with my singular vision – is no longer just mine – it belongs to a connected, creative, collaborative community. And while I’ll continue to write to Drunken Kong’s compelling remix of the Archer’s vision – I no longer feel alone.
