"Applesauce" is a fun and quirky pop song that features elements of hip-hop and jazz. After listening to his other two tracks on Spotify, I believe Sam.Sts (AKA Sam Latty) is a talented and underrated independent artist with a bright future ahead of him. Anyway, the catchy hook and colorful production make "Applesauce" a perfect track to play during a summer picnic. Adam Faler and Sam Latty himself produced the instrumental on this track, which builds a strong foundation for the anthem. I love the sound of the wild and jazzy electric guitar layered over the smooth and subtle bassline. Also, the tambourines during the hook are a nice touch. Every time I replay the record, I notice a different layer to the production that I didn't catch before. So, it is safe to say that the instrumental is a massive highlight for "Applesauce."
Sam's boyish vocals on the track are also excellent and remind me of Rex Orange County's singing voice. Also, Sam does a great job of showing off his versatility by rapping the second verse of the song. Interestingly enough, Sam's lyrics are about falling in love with a girl. However, it seems like the "perfect girl" that Sam is talking about is in his dreams and not a real person.
"That girl is mighty fine, I wish that I could make her mine / I’ll be waking up soon, I’m always running out of time / That girl that’s in my dreams / How perfect could she be"
We all like to romanticize the idea of the perfect soulmate, which doesn't exist. And I think Sam does a great job of conveying this misconception in an entertaining and literal fashion. But, that is just the way I interpreted it. Either way, Sam's fun personality shines on this track through the lyrics.
Overall, "Applesauce" is a gem that more people will continue to discover in the upcoming months. And I am thrilled to add it to the picnic playlist.
