Yes! It's Cory Wong. A true upholder in the current status of groove music. Cory has plenty of notable achievements, associated acts, and a lot of music released. Today the focus is on "Team Sports." This hot track is a bit more stand out than others. It contains funky, unique elements. And if there is anything we are pursuing with this playlist, it's funky, unique elements. Wong brings it.
There is more than just ultra thick Strat tone mastery here. Cory plays his axe like a percussion instrument with a strong (or shall we say string) interest in harmony. A simple but clever drum feel allows happy, cascading funk lines to sing and overlap. Vintage drum machines sway in and out for flavor. A swimming, kind to the ears bridge (with more beautiful drumming) treads lightly before it's time to slam back into the thumping A section. Dance. Then it happens...that post percussion solo, low-down-breakdown section. You can hear the look on Cory's face. That's rhythm wha-wha guitar. No need for a vocal here, not today. What is unexpected, and most appreciated is the songs outro. An awesomely out-of-bounds, slightly out-of-tune piano excursion atop more drum machines. If only we could be so lucky to hear this type of funk on an elevator ride.
