I'm not too sure if the cat is out of the bag yet on Doug Shorts, but it's bound to be. At least for real-deal boogie enthusiasts it will be. This track is undeniably hot. A dear friend and trusted music aficionado sent this to me recently. His mind was blown, as was mine upon first listen. I started to sweat. The production, the groove, the vocals and lyrics...all ten out of ten.
The song has Daptone Records drum tones and foundation, but with big synth soaked dance moves and reverbed out slaps. And behind it all, a man with a voice and story that allows the music to feel so good and sound so true. It turns out Doug is no newcomer to the funk game. He's been writing spicy tunes since the 70's and is now emerging superbly with his new EP Casual Encounter (Daptone.) On the surface this hip little groover is catchy and dancy. But the Wanderlings give you much more than just that. You also get a pungent percussion break equipped with cuíca, and a fierce guitar solo. Accessible, yet tasty.
