Are we doomed?
Is this how it’s going to be?
Forever?
Damn I hope not.
I mean I get it – right now there’s a global pandemic and we’re all locked away in our rooms – but that’s not of our choice. This track isn’t about that – it doesn’t speak to a temporary condition – it speaks to the human condition.
You see – you can spend your time in purgatory but, while you’re alive – and you have a choice – why the fuck would you?
I’m in love with the groove of this track – how fucking comfortable it feels – Tom’s inimitable vocal stretching authentically over the chorus – but it’s the lyric that grabs my attention:
“We went for a walk
On Valentines day, Santa Monica beach
Said you never cared much, for that holiday, so anyway…
We went back to the house
And you turned around
Said you’d never felt more alone”
How fucking awful is that?!
And it sets up the question: What are you going to do? What are you going to do with your time? Are you going to wallow in some barely acceptable facsimile of love or are you actually going to live a life?
The song exists – and we resonate with it – ‘cos it’s so fucking hard to overcome the inertia of just being OK – so long as what we have now isn’t too bad – at least – not all the time.
But that’s not what Mr. Freund is about.
Mr. Freund understands that overcoming inertia requires energy – requires behavior – requires decisions – one way or another – choose to leave – choose to stay – at this point it really makes no difference, but choose to do something – ‘cos every day you don’t – you die a little more.
And that – would be the ultimate thing to grieve for.
