Bobby Hutcherson was a great jazz vibraphonist, one of the many great artists we lost last year. "Montara" is from Hutcherson's album of the same name, released in 1975 on the jazz label Blue Note. Montara is also a city in Northern California, where he lived with his wife until his passing last year.
It's easy to see why this has been sampled by numerous hip hop songs, including a remake by Madlib. This tune is a dreamy melody over a smooth Latin percussion section. Hutcherson takes a rhythmically adventurous solo before the horn section joins him again to play the melody. One can easily imagine sitting on the porch of a beach side house in Montara, relaxing and enjoying the view, listening to some of the greatest musicians of our time.

Drum set player and percussionist Caitlin Moss was born and raised in Los Angeles. She has performed at such venues as the Skirball Center and the Ford Amphitheatre and has toured nationally and internationally, including performances in Mexico and Cuba, with Grammy-winning bands La Santa Cecilia and Quetzal. She performs and records in Los Angeles as a freelance musician and as a member of several original bands. Caitlin is also teaching drum set, percussion, piano, and music production classes at a youth arts center operated by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.
