The Collection is a seven-member outfit that combines pop melodies with horns and synths to create energetic hopeful pop songs. Their dazzling tune “Beautiful Life” serves as a positive anthem for the band from its optimistic opening lines. It starts off in a cappella-like fashion, as the band mates belt out the first lyrics of the pleasant composition. Piano chords slowly take over, followed closely by sharp guitar strums, before the well-orchestrated instrumentation finally erupts.
With its extravagant chorus, listeners of the sing-along folk-pop gem will undoubtedly have a smile on their face from start to finish. The message here is to always appreciate the charm and appeal of life, regardless of the situation at hand.
A CONVERSATION WITH DAVID WIMBISH OF THE COLLECTION
Tim: Okay, so what are the band’s goals?
David: We care about making music that’s honest about hope and pain and allows for vulnerability. Our goal is to create spaces that allow others to be themselves in whatever place they’re in and to connect together through self-expression.
Tim: What do you hope to achieve with your music?
David: When I’ve felt most alone in my life, music has been the thing that has made me feel seen and heard. If we get to make even one person feel seen and heard in their loneliness, it feels to me like we’ve achieved something meaningful.
Tim: How does the songwriting process start?
David: I usually get a melody in my head, often while driving. Typically I try to sing it into my iPhone and it starts churning for a long time until it becomes a song. After a demo or two, it gets brought to the band for collaborative arrangement.
Tim: What are your influences?
David: So many things influence me - books and movies and story especially. A few recent inspirations were East of Eden and Ana Karenina. Musically, Ella Fitzgerald, Conor Oberst, Tom Waits, and Lewis Capaldi play a major role.
