It’s finally a warm night and it is welcomed with deep gratitude. The air is pleasantly humid and light breath flows in and out of my body with gentle ease. A steamy tea brews beside me. Always. Headphones are snuggly set in each ear, eagerly awaiting to float amongst the waves of sound. Eyes are closed, amplifying my sensitivity to the noises wrapping themselves around me. Sitting cross-legged, a guided musical meditation ensues.
The sounds of Mesita aka James Cooley cascades through the pulsing veins of the wires in my headphones and soon after a smile is formed. The first track I ever heard by Cooley was “Somewhere Else” and a decade later I still find it to be an intensely emotional experience. Cooley is planted deeply into my garden of beautiful beings. He possesses the ability to speak to the parts of us that cannot speak for themselves. He creates music with the intensity and simultaneous grace of a waterfall. Music that often spirals into a messy and wildly passionate dance of opposing dynamic sounds. And like that wildness that lives in all of us, the melody pounces from its dormancy and attacks with full force onto the emotions that need confronting.
This is music that becomes a part of you. Not just a melody and a voice and instrumentation. It soaks into your skin like the sun, flows along with the blood in your veins and collides with the rhythm of your heart. It is a deep pulsing life force awaiting to connect with your energy and create the experience you need to have at that moment in time. The music of Mesita is a lifelong journey that I look forward to experiencing in all the decades to come.
