Be prepared to take a deep dive into your wild ocean of feelings while listening to Khruangbin. I had the glorious pleasure of recently witnessing the live performance of these three funky gurus creating pure sunlit sounds. It is worth noting that their name is Thai for airplane. The snazzy identity is just the beginning of their eclectic melting pot of genre blending musical culture.
The track “Friday Morning” in particular is immensely special. Their sound of love is magnificently portrayed through this song.It grasps onto your soul and permeates love into every crevice of your body. It begins with the the simple and calm drum beats of Donald (DJ) Johnson. From there, the grooviest bass lines around played by Laura Lee. And finally the effortless and gentle shredding of the guitarist Mark Speer. For six minutes there is no distraction from your thoughts as the instruments do the talking. You can of course choose to retreat into the mind and study your thoughts or just be in the present moment and focus on the melodic joy of the record. That is the true beauty of a song that speaks through sound and allows you to hear your words versus someone else's. It is the true beauty of music in its entirety.
On top of their ability to create this beautiful space of sound, they have opened up the unique world of music into peoples lives like never before. I truly feel that we miss so much staying in the comfort zone of our favorite oldies tunes, as wonderful as they are to have. Hearing the sounds of Thai funk, for example, was like breathing in a breath of fresh air. It is in these moments that our love for music can be jolted back to life if we are ever feeling stagnant in our creativity. I never want to lose the childlike wonder I feel every time I happen upon awe inspiring music. Thanks for reigniting my love for contemplation and wondrous music Khruangbin.
