Gentle rapping and sultry vocals is what initially got me hooked on Jess Smyth. She exudes a rather soothing and hypnotic voice that draws you in immediately. There is truly something intriguing about darling Jess Smyth aka Biig Piig. Her song “Flirt” spoke to me today. A simple song with heavy words dissecting the thoughts that occur when you begin to find yourself infatuated with someone. A wild and beautiful experience in which levels of love bubble to the surface that we often forget exists.
For me the song is best picked apart and examined at each line. She repeats through the song “I’ll give you your space now”. Space. Something so important to give ourselves. But also the thought of too much space can terrify us. Space to think and space to feel. I think that’s my fear of space. You expose yourself to let every thought and feeling emerge because there is little to no distractions standing in the way. However, it is also an invitation to allow yourself to feel and think about the things that desperately need to be felt and thought about. In the case of this song, those levels of love enter the space. We begin to question everything and feel utterly incapable of logic. We are eager to be with them but withdrawn with fear of rejection or whether or not we are ready to risk sharing our whole being with another. This space is needed until we begin to fill it with doubts and assumptions of love that are constructed only in our own minds. I think you get where I am going with this or at least I hope you do. Always remember the space can also allow those levels of love to include a deeper love for yourself in addition to a deeper love of another. I say utilize the space. Make it sacred and relish in your ability to hang around for a bit with all your thoughts and all your feelings. Make it cozy for when you inevitably return. Your thoughts and feelings will always be there so why not listen to what they have to say.
As I have begun to look deeper into songs and artists, I just can't get over music’s ability to allow us to soak in so much meaning from a combination of harmonious words and sounds. There is so much comfort that can be found when a song resonates deeply and reminds us that we collectively go through tremendous experiences in this life. Looking forward to further entrancement of miss Jess Smyth.
