It only seems fitting to start this playlist and song of the month with a song from Queen Badu herself... after all, she did inspire this playlist. Although I couldn’t pinpoint a favourite song of hers - someone could tie me up for a week with the sole mission to find it and I wouldn’t be able to - Appletree is the first Badu beauty that blessed my ears.
For those of you that don’t know her (it’s ok, I’ll forgive you), Erykah Badu is best known as the Queen of Neo-Soul. And for those of you that don’t know what Neo-Soul is, google reliably informs me that it is a style of music that emerged from soul and contemporary R&B. And let me tell you right here, right now (and excuse my language, but there’s no eloquent way to put it): it’s bloody BRILLIANT.
Appletree was the 3rd single released as part of Badu’s first album ‘Baduizm’. Cue 4 minutes 25 seconds of gloriousness where Badu compares her knowledge and wisdom as fruits on a tree – yep, you know it, an apple tree. It teaches important messages such as to count your blessings. I certainly counted mine when I stumbled across it in my uncle’s vinyl collection a few years ago.

About The Curator - Lizzy Wood
Hey, I’m Lizzy! I am a Music and Law student at the University of Liverpool. I am passionate about maintaining artistic integrity in an increasingly commercialised industry, particularly for young and inexperienced female artists. My aim is to develop, promote and encourage women in music. I enjoy a variety of music genres. If I had to pick a favourite, it would have to be R&B/Soul. Jazz also comes into the mix... how could it not?!
Alongside my degree I enjoy managing an artist, Greta Lovisa, as well as leading both small-scale and large-scale charitable music events.
