The band Chicago, which was originally Chicago Transit Authority, had a unique sound when they hit the scene. They blended a little rock, a little soul and a little jazz, a mixture that made them a sort of rock version of Earth, Wind & Fire. Both groups always had a stage full of musicians and a supersonic horn section. The tempo of the song has a euphoric trajectory, veering from upbeat to slower, to upbeat again, bringing to mind the pace of taking an actual walk. This song should have been the official song of the summer in the 70s because it certainly brings to mind hot fun in the summer time.
The certified Gold record hit #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is the band's highest charting single to date. It's a rollicking good song about the simple pleasures of spending a Saturday in the park on the the 4th of July. From the vocals, to the melody to the pace, it's pure pop rock confection and perfection.
