The Eagles was one of the primary groups that defined the sound of the 70s. The pristine harmonies and sleepy country rock sound captured the attitude and desires of a generation. "One Of These Nights" was their second hit and was the title track from the album that was released in 1975. Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey had wanted to veer away from their ballad, country rock sound and let disco and R&B influence this one. It definitely has a groovy, danceable sound, but stilll manages to encapsulate what makes the Eagles special...those honied harmonies and master musicanship. If any group defined the coolness of the 70s, besides Led Zeppelin, it was these guys.
According to the late great Frey, they shared a studio with the Bee Gees in Miami when they were recording the album. The bass drum pattern of "four-on-the-floor" used in the song was supposed to be a nod to disco. With Don Henley's gravelly, stirring voice and the syncopated rhythms of this tune, it has all the "bite" that Frey wanted it to. Not many groups can ride that fine line between country, rock and R&B, but the Eagles do easily and make "One Of These Nights" an enduring classic.
