George Harrison was known as the quiet Beatle. They say still waters run deep and that certainly was the case for this introspective songwriter. While Lennon/McCartney was known as the winning songwriting team of the Beatles, George contributed his fair share of profound, gorgeous tunes. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Something" are two of the most beautiful songs ever written and they've had countless covers. When the Beatles were winding down, George started exploring spirituality and visited India. One timeless and inspiring song that sprung from his spiritual quest was "My Sweet Lord."
The song was released as his first single as a solo artist in November of 1970 and it was the first number one for an ex-Beatle. While he did the song about Hindu god Krishna, it has a universal message. During the time this came out, many youth had given up traditional religion in order to explore spirituality instead. This song spoke to them. It also spoke to Christians, Muslims....the gamut of believers in a higher power and was also secular in that it had an upbeat cadence and encouraging words. People then and now need a ray of hope and this song provides it.
