Ayyuka is a band from Turkey that was found in 2001. The word “ayyuka” means, to rise and to be loud. Its members are Alican Tezer (drums), Altan Sebüktekin (bass) and Özgür Yılmaz (vocals/guitar). They played as an opening-act for Sonic Youth and Jonathan Rickman, as well as playing at festivals in Berlin, Paris, Lyon and Sao Paolo. Their first album was released in 2007.
It is hard to fit Ayyuka into just one genre. They can be described as a rock, jazz or ethnic, psychedelic or alternative band. Some of their instrumental songs remind me of Pink Floyd and the Turkish band “Gevende”. They do a lot of successful improvisations.
The album that contains the song Sömestr is the band’s third studio album that was released in 2015. The album’s sound in the fully instrumental album “moves between psychedelic rock, afro rhythms and much else besides”. In the song “Sömestr”; Ayyuka collaborates with Orlando Julius, the Nigerian artist who is the founder of the Afro-Beat genre.
