Selda Bağcan is one of the most influential artists of the psychedelic scene of Turkey. She started her music career in the 70s. She immediately attained success and started her concerts, mainly in Turkey and Germany. She also starred in traditional Turkish movies known as ‘Yeşilçam movies’.
Because of her political views, she was prevented from producing her music due to the 1980 coup. After that, on 24 July 1984, she was imprisoned due to her political views and statements. Her passport was in the hands of the government so she was not able to perform internationally until 1987. Even though she could not travel, she was honored by Peter Gabriel who played one of her songs at the WOMAD Festival. With the efforts of the WOMAD Foundation, she received her passport and continued with her international concerts. In 1990, with the invitation of Interkultureel Centrum from The Netherlands she performed in many cities in Europe. She also appeared in many movie soundtracks. Her music is political, provocative and familiar.
