Palmiyeler (The Palms) is an indie, alternative and psychedelic band from Turkey. Unlike many Turkish bands, they avoid fancy lyrics and serious topics. Their success is in this: they manage to make simple lyrics sound profound. Their integration of lyrics is very effective.
Palmiyeler seems to be influenced by mostly British and American indie music. Their music resembles the sounds of "The Smiths" and "The Stone Roses". However, this does not mean that they don’t have a unique style. The fact that they have grown up in Turkey leaves small hints in their songs about their origin. They are influenced by foreign bands but their lyrics are Turkish, they don’t put that aside.
In their songs, the most prominent elements are jangly guitars, reverb and mostly uplifting melodies. Keyboards add a misty vibe and synthesizers brighten the sound. Their songs resemble the tunes of 80’s revival bands. As the group members state: “Palmiyeler invites you for a drink by wavy beaches where you can enjoy their fun-psych-surf-pop sounds with serious lyrics darken by Istanbul’s genuine chaos.”
