In recent years Wolf Alice has occasionally popped up on my radar. I thoroughly enjoyed them in 2014, when I discovered their song “She” off of their EP Blush. I bopped my head to “Fluffy,” one of the lead singles off their debut Your Love is Cool. But I didn’t really love them until Visions of a Life, their sophomore record.
My relationship with Visions of a Life began with the second cut from the record “Don’t Delete the Kisses”, which let me tumble right back into the teenage angst of unrequited love. The song made that feeling so vivid, so palpable again. Instantly I put it on my “2017” playlist on Spotify and I would cherish the moments whenever it would come on randomly. When the album came out, I saw how alt-J, one of my favorite bands, had posted about it on Facebook, congratulating Wolf Alice on another stellar record. I gave it a spin - and couldn’t stop listening for about a month. Well, not true. I kept alternating with Shilpa Ray’s new record, but more on that later.
Visions of a Life combines grungy guitars, enticing pop melodies and melancholic lyrics. Think a wonderful melange of Hole's attitude, Tori Amos' and Alice Glass’ songwriting and Juliette and the Licks’ flair.
