Fans of Heartless Bastards, Delta Spirit or The Detroit Cobras listen up! This week I proudly present the first submission to my playlist. The band Year of October submitted the track this week via the from on Music to Conquer Mountains with the note "The song is based on a short story by Phlecia Sullivan and involves a girl getting over an abusive relationship.” Sullivan also is the lead singer of the band, which has been existing since 2010. Her and guitarist Josh Sullivan (no idea, if they’re related) founded Year of October when they were at University of Kentucky.
“Come & Get it” is a single from their third full-length record Trouble Comes. It’s arranged fairly simple - bass, drums, guitars, vocals - and definitely has a DIY-vibe. Sullivan’s voice rings clear and strong, while the instruments bring forth some good old fashioned alt-rock. It’s a solid tune from a young band worth supporting.

About the curator - Julia Maehner
Julia knows two main passions: Music and writing. From an early age she has been making music after a fashion. When she was 13, she sat herself down and decided: “I will be a music journalist. Because I love music and writing.” After a brief intermezzo in New York City working for the music boutique agency Girlie Action as a digital marketer, she moved back to Germany. This experience helped her build her know-how for her content marketing client, the business intelligence software CoffeeCup. She still writes for several German music and tech magazines and is working on launching her own blog, amps on ears.
