We Are Lightning – Amongster

This song perhaps is a personal choice, Amongster was an artist I took a chance on seeing, I was in Brussels on a training trip and I wanted to try go and see him perform after hearing tracks. My friend and I waiting outside to try get a scalp ticket and I bought one off a teacher who’d come to watch the show selling at face value, my friend went inside talked to the box office and was told it was sold out but then someone came in and left the extra ticket at the desk so my mate got in free.

I mainly chose this song for the string section at the end, but the journey to it is full of reflection and intent to do something more with one’s life. Ok I really need to talk about the string section to start, the movement of the Eyvind Kang’s Viola is just mystical with guitar, piano, jew’s harp and a reverse effect backing, is all about nocturnal majesty.This string writing is simple yet somehow really profound and within it likes a sense of conclusion, settling on a next step.
Hollow Talk – Choir of Young Believers

Hollow Talk is best known as the theme tune to scandi-noir crime thriller The Bridge, chosen for its sparse brooding texture with light moments that work well with the Nordic Noir tone. For me this tune can do more for the late night journey. This is the some to watch streetlights passing by and recognising what is happening in the nocturnal world around you.

The pop chamber group Penguin Café have taken a classic Simian Mobile Disco tune and given it an acoustic treating that’s better than that shit cover an Ed Sheeran song you heard on a John Lewis ad, this cover gives depth and adds to the train.

I first heard this track from Bonobo’s Late Nite Tales and am like whaaaaaat? Nina Simone did Reggae. Well she didn’t just do reggae she wrote an anthem to define the dark streets corroding to urban decay and post-industrial cities with wheels falling off the Wagon.
