OK so most people know “Solid Air” and perhaps think of John Martyn as that rather gruff voiced dude who died (essentially) from consumption, having had a leg amputated along the way, but as a young, passionate, hard drinking buccaneer on the UK folk rock circuit back in the 70's he was also renowned as a supreme guitarist and this track features just that.
Glyndebourne, for those living outside the UK, is a grand country place in deepest Sussex where opera takes place in the summer frequented mainly by the wealthy. Glistening gives away that John was more into the rainfall than the opera! Have you heard a better phrasing to illustrate rain? Maybe Michael Chapman’s epic “Rainmaker” comes close. Settle back and imagine the rain as your friend.

I grew up listening to music from the late 60’s onwards. Pirate pop radio; swapping LP’s with friends; exploring genres; daydreaming over the latest woofer and tweeter.
In reality I spent thirty years imparting imperfect knowledge of English literature and drama to young minds in school. Regrets? No. I loved teaching; loved the interaction with the pupils, and made lifelong friends as a result. And what better way to keep up to date with music? I always played stuff in my lessons, and as a result, I’d be bombarded with suggestions from my flock! “Sir! Have you heard…?”
