This track is, in so many ways, the truest representation of my playlist. For starters, it amalgamates musical traditions, a marker of this playlist. It is emotionally rich: mixing an acute anthemic beat with a mellow vibe. And it psyches me so much that this album was conceived on the road. It proves my long-held belief that travel and all the discomfort it induces, ignites creative energy, allowing for the birth of beautiful thoughts and ideas.
Wona is an obvious pick from this EP titled Johanessburg. It is full of surprises. The lyrics are at such interesting odds with the African beat that forms the crux of the track. And the chorus, my favourite part of the track, introduces not only Marcus Mumford's iconic voice but also this double beat. It is so energising; like one of those sounds that will bring a wide smile to your face and make you feel invincible like you're part of something so much larger than yourself. It is almost like you're injected with a powerful dosage of confidence, I cannot explain what it is, just that it is insanely beautiful. Just the fact that so many voices find a place on this track makes it so rich. A collaboration could hardly have yielded anything better.
If you're looking for some positive energy this week, Wona is your song.
